Mila Year 13 Great North Run Fundraiser
Mila one of our A Level Geography students is doing the Great North Run this Sunday to raise money for The Stroke Association. She would appreciate any donations using the following link: Stroke Association – Mila Staines
She has asked me to forward the reasoning behind the fundraiser which I have put below:
Last year on New Year’s Eve, my family were informed about some devastating news that a dear family friend whom I affectionately refer to as my Uncle Bonj, had suffered a cardiac arrest  that morning at his home. We were all shocked and devastated and constantly kept in touch as this was his second, ‘out of hospital’ cardiac arrest, the first one occurring when I was just 7 years old.
He was immediately taken to A & E Resus where they attempted to stabilize him and put him into an induced coma before relocating him to the ICU unit. Uncle Bonj remained in the ICU for 3 months where he was given a 5% chance of survival. After several attempts to bring him out of his coma he eventually came around in time to celebrate his 60th birthday, although he was confused and unsure of where he was or what had happened.
During these long and arduous months I made it my mission to bake sweet treats such as cakes and biscuits weekly that were delivered to their family home.
Unfortunately, during his coma he suffered not one, but two strokes which have forced him to live everyday trying to regain speech, memories and mobility.
Shortly after his discharge from hospital I felt driven by Uncle Bonj’s and his family’s resilience through this tough time.
With this in mind, I chose to put myself forward to complete the Great North Run to raise money for the Stroke Association who do incredible work in helping those that have been affected by strokes. I would greatly appreciate any donations to this special charity that have helped my Uncle Bonj to rehabilitate and achieve everything he has regained, such as his ability to drive, socialize and most importantly continue to thrive everyday in such a remarkable way.
Thank you in anticipation for your generosity,
Mila
