We consider the teaching of behaviour to be just as significant as academic learning and readiness.
Our behaviour curriculum is taught by assuming two points, taken from work by Tom Bennett who is the lead behaviour advisor to the Department for Education (DfE):
Almost all children want to do what is expected of them and what is often considered poor behaviour from children is often due to a lack of high expectations, clarity, consistency and respect in adult behaviour.
If high expectations, clarity, consistency and respect exist, what remains as ‘poor behaviour’ is often rooted either in the way a child has been socialised or previous experience of relationships with adults in their life. They therefore need our support in learning how to change that.
A Branston student carries our ethos both in school and in the community.
‘Our aim is to prepare our students, not just for studying our academic curriculum but developing as a whole person, giving them the opportunity to have choices about moving to have a happy and successful life in the future by achieving their potential.’
When students wear our uniform, they embrace our values of; Community, Aspiration, Resilience, Respect and Kindness.

We have a behaviour curriculum so we...
Work together as a community to ensure that everybody has the right to an education. If we don’t work together, valuable lesson time may be lost, and progress will be affected.
Show Kindness and Respect and care for everybody in our school, be that in lessons or around the school at break, lunch time and lesson transitions. Everybody has the right to be respected and we work together to be kind and supportive.
Develop Resilience to reflect and learn from our experiences and be the best that we can be. We respond maturely to advice and feedback from staff and strive to improve in all that we do.
Have Aspiration to take responsibility for our own actions and work hard to achieve our future goals.
We need rules, routines and consequences because...
Every student matters
Learning matters
Everyone deserves an environment where they can achieve their best
It enables teachers and support staff to teach and support you in your learning
In any classroom we need to work together so that everyone can achieve their best, this means not everyone can get what they want all of the time. The decision the teacher makes is for the good of the whole class, and so you can achieve your best.
We do things this way at Branston because we...
are kind to others, polite and respectful to all and respect our school’s policy on Equal Opportunities because everybody has the right to feel valued, confident and safe. We value respect.
respect other peoples’ views, opinions and cultures, because it is unacceptable to make offensive comments. We value kindness.
stand up to bullying and report incidents of bullying because nobody should feel scared or uncomfortable in our school community. Do not turn a blind eye. We value kindness.
are aware of what is happening around us and speak out about things that are not right because we all have a responsibility to make sure everybody is valued at our school and have a positive experience. We value kindness.
use social media responsibly and positively because the abuse of social media can have long term, negative effects. Don’t be responsible for making somebody else feel ‘bad’. Be kind.
want to be in a clean environment. We place all rubbish in the bins and encourage others to do the same. Nobody wants to be surrounded by litter in communal areas or in classrooms. We value respect.
behave sensibly and maturely when travelling to and from our school because we are a BCA student, and we carry our ethos. Members of the community will know who we are and `community is important to us. We value our community.
take pride in our appearance and recognise we are working in a professional, formal environment. It maximises learning time as conversations about not doing the right thing are minimised. We value being aspirational.
make sure we are fully prepared for the day ahead by having the correct equipment, completing homework and using our planner effectively, because these good habits will maximise learning time and minimise conversations about not meeting expectations. We value being aspirational.
we need to maximise learning time and being punctual will do this, so we move to lessons quickly. Thinking that it is acceptable to dawdle with friends or finish conversations with friends is not acceptable. Conversations about lateness are a waste of precious time. We value respect.
follow the entry/exit routines and the transition expectations because this will help to create a calm learning environment and help maximise learning time. We value respect.
it shows we are committed to achieving and exceeding our potential and this allows everybody the opportunity to learn. So we stay on task in all lessons and focus. We value being aspirational.
respect the authority of our teachers and do not answer back because our teachers are always the adult in authority. They are responsible for our health and safety and for delivering the curriculum to the whole class. If we are rude or disrespectful, we will spoil the lesson for the other students and some tasks may not get completed which could impact on knowledge and progress. We value respect.
do your best because it is important for us to know where our strengths and weaknesses lie so we know which areas/topics need more attention. We prepare for assessments.
take time to read and respond to teacher feedback in an objective way; we do not take it personally because it may be difficult to hear some feedback. Be assured that our teachers are giving it to us because they want us to do better. We value resilience.
do our homework to the best of our ability and meet all deadlines because this will help us to develop our independent learning skills which will stay with us for the rest of our life both in education and in the workplace. We value being aspirational.
